The Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as Chair for the 2017 ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), will be hosting the 49th AEM Meeting and Related Meetings in Manila this September 6-11. This will be held at the Manila Marirott Hotel, Pasay City. DTI as the host of this ministerial event will be led by Secretary Ramon M. Lopez and DTI Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo as the AEM Chair and AEM PH lead respectively.

In light of the implementation of the AEC, this event’s coverage will tackle tactical ways for freer trade and trade facilitation, investments and innovation.

The deliverables under the Philippines’s chairmanship include strategic measures for an ASEAN-wide Self-certification Scheme, developing a more robust method for AEC compliance monitoring with the use of ASEAN Seamless Trade Facilitation Indicators (ASTFI) and Review Mechanism for AEC, developing a more facilitative and transparent trade in services regime sector through the ASEAN Trade in Services Agreement (ATISA) negotiations, and strengthening investments through the Focused and Strategic (FAST) Action Agenda on Investment, and enhancing intra-regional connectivity and bolstering socio-economic growth in the regions through the launch of the ASEAN Roll-on Roll-off (RORO) Shipping Network.

Moreover, the Philippines is introducing Business in ASEAN which includes Women Economic Empowerment in AEC as well as cross-border trade and ecosystem through E-Commerce and the ASEAN Declaration on Innovation. These initiatives are aligned with one of the six thematic priorities with the theme of “inclusive, innovation-led growth”.

With 450 expected delegates and 180 media representatives, this event aims to discuss pertinent issues concerning the economic agenda, trade services and innovation not only within the ASEAN Member States (AMS) but also with its major economic partners. These economic partners would include delegates and leaders from Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the United States.
